From Lake Tahoe to Pyramid Lake, the Truckee River flows just over one hundred miles and is a microcosm of Western water issues. Life blood of northwestern Nevada, the Truckee River is rich in history and controversy. Stakeholders on the River include cities, farmers, wetlands, endangered fish, Native Americans, two states and the federal government.
This two-day field study course will cover hydrology, water quality deterioration and remediation, endangered species, water flow regulation under the Orr Ditch Decree and Truckee River Agreement, hydropower generation, channel restoration, flood control planning, legal issues, negotiated solutions, and the future of the Truckee River under the Truckee River Operation Agreement (TROA).
This is a full two-day field course by bus, covering the entire length of the Truckee River.
Space permitting, there is flexibility for individuals to sign up for one day only.
Seating is limited, and there is a moderate amount of walking involved.
