Frank Lloyd Wright and the House Beautiful demonstrates this well-known architect’s commitment to creating a new way of life for Americans through innovative architecture and interior design. The phrase “house beautiful” was coined in the early twentieth century to refer to a principle of architectural and social reform which proposed that an individual’s quality of life could be improved by redesigning one’s material environment—an ideal that remained central for Wright throughout his 70-year career. Wright believed a house should provide physical and spiritual refuge to its inhabitants and that this could only come about through complete integration of all parts to the whole. Not only should the building rise quietly from its site, but everything within—from furniture to textiles—must contribute to its overall harmony and repose.
More than 100 original objects will be on display, including furniture, metal work, textiles, drawings, publications, and accessories from the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation and other collections. The NMA is the closing venue for Frank Lloyd Wright and the House Beautiful.
Frank Lloyd Wright and the House Beautiful is organized by International Arts & Artists, Washington, DC, in cooperation with The Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation, Scottsdale, AZ.
